About
Homeschool Passion is a Web site dedicated to helping encourage, educate and empower parents who are considering or are currently educating their children at home. It includes uplifting devotions, tips for making the homeschool experience successful, links to interesting information and free resources to help families make the most of their homeschooling dollars. It also includes insights from real moms and dads who are in the trenches so we can learn from those who have gone before us.
Every family is different just as every child is different. The manner in which you conduct your homeschool may vary wildly from others. That said, Homeschool Passion does not promise to have all the answers to every situation, and I promise never to assume, or infer, that I do. I am simply an unsuspecting mom who has fallen in love with homeschooling and has benefitted—both within myself and as a parent—from the journey.
You know the saying “Never say never?” That’s me and homeschooling. I never, ever thought I would be homeschooling my children or that I would be so excited about it. I had close friends who homeschooled, and while I outwardly applauded them for their efforts, I was clueless about what it was they were doing. I wasn’t convinced homeschooling was the best choice and certainly didn’t want to consider it for my family.
When my four-year-old daughter began showing an interest in reading, I found myself gently dipping a toe into the world of homeschooling. Because of how her birthday falls, she wouldn’t begin kindergarten until she was six, so I had a year-and-a-half to either encourage her desire to read or ignore it. My husband found a well-known curriculum, and I started to teach my daughter phonics.
Much to my surprise, she was reading small books on her own within weeks, and she loved sitting down to learn with me. To her, it was simply time with mom. We began expanding her repertoire to include math and handwriting. Again, she excelled.
Encouraged by what I was experiencing, I went to the library and began reading books on homeschooling. I become obsessed, reading everything I could get my hands on—different styles, how-tos, education philosophies, you name it. I was challenged in a whole new way. My thoughts on homeschooling and education were flipped upside down, and I came away admitting that my own education, while very normal and traditional—public elementary and high school, private university—could have been better. Soon the desire to offer my own children a different kind of education became something I couldn’t escape. It wasn’t long before I had convinced my husband that homeschooling was the right choice for us, and our journey truly began.
Since then we have experienced highs and lows. I have continued to read, learn all I can, talk to more experienced homeschoolers and listen to the Holy Spirit, my husband and my children. Our homeschool is a work in progress. We are not perfect, and I doubt we ever will be. But what we have discovered is the joy of educating our children at home.
I have also discovered that the Web has wonderful resources that can benefit homeschooling families. Unfortunately, they are often scattered and difficult to find. That’s where Homeschool Passion comes in. As a professional writer, I can’t help but want to share what I find with others. I get a thrill from helping you succeed, and I hope to create a place where parents can be encouraged and also where they can find the resources they need.
So as you join me, I hope you will indeed be encouraged to know that whether or not you decide homeschooling is right for your family, even if only for a short while, you should be applauded for simply considering it. And while you homeschool, I hope Homeschool Passion can educate you on some marvelous resources that are available and empower you to create the best homeschool possible for your family. I also hope that homeschooling will become as much of a passion for you as it has become for me and that you will reap bountiful rewards for investing your love, energy and time into your children.
Blessings and peace!
